This is one of the severe cyclonic storm approaching the country, said the India Meteorological Department (IMD). It is expected to hit the Gujarat on 16th May 2021. This is the first cyclone in this year & it is considered as very severe by the department. Hence yellow alert for the coasts of Gujarat and Diu and Daman has already been issued. What is the name of the Cyclone?
Name of the cyclone is Tauktae. It is pronounced as Tau’te In Myanmar. It means ‘gecko’, a highly vocal lizard, in the Burmese language. It will be a surprising fact that name of the cyclone are given by countries of the region rotation wise.
It is yet another interesting fact that there are 13 countries in the panel of World Meteorological Organisation/United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (WMO/ESCAP) Panel on Tropical Cyclones (PTC) for naming cyclones in the regions.
In 2020, a list of 169 cyclone were released having name of 13 cyclones by each country in the panel. India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Pakistan, the Maldives, Oman, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Iran, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Yemen are in the panel.
Name of cyclones in the region [Year 2020]
There were five major cyclone that hit the region in 2020. The most dangerous cyclone that killed more than 100 people came in the region in May 2020. Its name was Amphan [Means Sky & name was given by Thailand]
In June 2020, another cyclone named Nisarga [Means Overwhelming Flood and name was given by Bangladesh] hits the Indian coasts at Maharashtra & Goa. It also did damage of multi millions and took away 6 lives.
Gati [Means speed and name was given by India] was the 3rd cyclone that hit African continent in November 2020. It also did vast damage and took away many lives.
Nivar [Means elevated and name was given by Iran] was the 4th cyclone that hit India and Sri Lanka in November 2020. This took more than 10 lives and did vast damage in the area.
Burevi [Means Black Mangroves and name was given by Maldives] was the last cyclone in 2020 that hit the country in December 2020.
